Still Life with Shells was painted from life under natural light in the artist’s historic Amsterdam studio. Working directly from observation, the artist positioned the canvas beside a carefully arranged composition of shells, repeatedly stepping back to compare the painted image with the physical motif, before going back painting on the canvas. Through this attentive process, he achieves a harmonious unity in which individual details are subordinated to the integrity of the whole. The result is a work that conveys not only beauty, but also a profound sense of harmony and stillness.
